Complex Numbers

An archive of the …DOG-ONE web sessions

Complex Numbers was a Seattle band that spent the back half of 2003 building a website by hand — first a one-page cry into the dark from a personal comcast.net account, then a Flash-banner teaser, then a full navigable site with a guestbook, an FAQ, and a visitor counter that ticked upward one refresh at a time.

It carried a concept album, …DOG-ONE, named for a stretch of sand at Omaha Beach, and twelve songs written about a very specific American anger — jobs going overseas, visas replacing citizens, corporations getting bailed out while workers got the door. This page reassembles what survived across three site rebuilds and nineteen saved project revisions.

Three sites, one year

The archive isn’t one website — it’s the fossil record of three, each built over the last, each dated by the file server that hosted it.

I — The comcast.net page

The first version was a single hand-coded HTML page on a personal comcast.net account, mint green background, four songs linked straight to MP3 files, lyrics on separate pages, and a live “body count” of jobs lost to outsourcing. No navigation, no styling library — just the message and the download links.

II — The splash page

The band registered complex-numbers.com and built a black-background splash screen: a Flash banner animation, one word — “Enter” — and a hidden autoplay MP3. It was a holding page while the real site was built behind it in NetObjects Fusion, saved as nineteen incremental project revisions between September 27 and October 11.

III — The full site

The final build: a proper navigation bar with rollover buttons, an FAQ, a guestbook with a Perl CGI script, a “Thanks To” credits page, and every lyric on its own page under a shared banner template. It was still being backed up as late as February 19, 2004 — the last confirmed edit before the trail goes cold.

Where the name came from

The album’s title page answered its own most-asked question directly: what does “DOG-ONE” mean? The site’s FAQ pointed here — to a condensed telling of the story behind the name, adapted from an account by Major General Edward J. Philbin.

The cover art is a dithered, high-contrast rendering of the Vierville draw — a ravine cut through the bluffs above Omaha Beach, code-named Exit D‑1, or “Dog One,” by Allied planners. On June 6, 1944, it was the objective of the 116th Regimental Combat Team of the 29th Infantry Division, fighting alongside the 1st Infantry Division to breach the Atlantic Wall.

“A grim ‘joke’ among the men of the 29th was that, in reality, it was three divisions: one in the field, one in the hospital, and one in the cemetery.”

German gun emplacements — including one sighted straight down the beach from the mouth of the draw — had near-total fields of fire over the sand below. The 29th Division alone suffered more than 20,000 casualties in the campaign; the town of Bedford, Virginia sent 46 of its own sons into that first wave, and lost half of them within sight of the draw that was their objective.

The site framed the connection plainly: a place named for a WWII beachhead, repurposed as the title of an album about a different kind of American who felt abandoned by their own country — not under fire, but out of work. “In this tumultuous world,” the original essay closed, “the future undoubtedly holds yet another road to Vierville.”

1948 aerial reconnaissance photograph of Omaha Beach at Vierville, with the D1 (Dog One) draw circled and annotated.

You Know My Government... Well He Don't Care About Me. You Know He's Giving Away My Job To Some, H-1B Visa Holder Coz I'm Getting Older. Well I Guess You Won't Find Me... Living In The Lap Of Luxury. You Know He Told Me... That If I Work Real Hard I Could Obtain The Things I Want With My Credit Card He Never Told Me... He Would Replace Me At A Whim. Anything That Insures It's Him... Living In The Lap Of Luxury. You Know I've Never Been One To Stand There With My Hand Out. You Won't Find Me In The Welfare Line. I've Always Believed In Paying My Fair Share And Now I Think That It's Corporate's Time You Know My President... Well He Don't Care About Me. You Know He's Giving Away My Job To Some, H-1B Visa Holder Coz I'm Getting Older. Well I Guess You Won't Find Me... Living In The Lap Of Luxury. You Know My Government.... Well He Don't Care About Me. You Know My President... Well He Don't Care About Me.

Well, Here's To You... Mister Corporation... For Selling Out The Nation... That Brought You Wealth. Let's Drink A Toast... To You And All Of Your Success and Don't Worry About The Mess... Here's To Your Health. We Still Have Too Much Suffering... But There's No Need To Ask Why. When We'd Sacrifice Our Brother... for A Bigger Slice Of The Pie. We Hear Them Say... We Need To Reform Welfare. Let's Get Em By The Short Hair... Yeah... We'll Be Rich. Well I Agree... We All Must Pay Our Fair Share. But Lets Start With Corporate Welfare... Ain't Life A Bitch. I Was Under The Impression... We Ended Slavery. The Fact Is We Have Children... Making Clothes For Kathy Lee. And So You Tell Me... What Is The Solution. There Is No Substitution... For A Full Belly. Seems The More We Get... The More We Want To Obtain. I Tell You It's Insane... Where's Our Empathy. If... Every Man And Woman... Living In This World Today... Would Truly Love His Neighbor... All Our Problems Would Just Go Away. And So You Tell Me... What Is The Solution. We Need A Contribution... To Humanity. Not... The More We Get... The More We Want To Obtain. I Tell You It's Insane... where's Our Empathy. I Tell You It's Insane... where's Our Empathy.

It Doesn't Matter What You Want... and It Don't Matter How You Get It. Just Make Sure That You Don't Get Caught... and They'll Put You In The Fortune 500. Yeah... In America... Land For The Very Rich and Home For The Greedy. If You Have Money Gods On Your Side... and You Can Do What Ever You Desire. They'll Ignore It If You Hurt Someone, They'll Over Look The Fact That You're A Liar In America... Land For The Filthy Rich and Home For The Greedy. The Energy King... He Won't Pay His Bill... But They Won't Shut Off His Electricity. You Know I Really Have Had My Fill... I Wonder If I'm The Only One Who Sees That... In America... Corporate Glitteratti
Lyrics only›
Well imagine my surprise when I turned on my TV. To check out the W.T.O. With the battle of Seattle unfolding right in front of me, I could see there was no place for them to go. Well they put up a no protest zone and donned their riot gear, Star wars troopers as far as the eye could see. Well we're not violent... how about you... were the chants that you could hear, To the bouncers for the corporate Glitteratti. With rubber bullets flying and tear gas in the air, They pushed them to the streets of Capital Hill And it looked just like a scene right out of Nazi Germany, For the bouncers for the Corporate Glitteratti Well now I know who's in charge and I know it's not you and me, The rules are made by those behind closed doors, And there is one power dressed in blue that separates us all, The bouncers for the Corporate Glitteratti Yeah the bouncers for the Corporate Glitteratti, Well they're not there to protect you and me Coz they're the bouncers for the Corporate Glitteratti

Three Weeks
Lyrics only›
We have so many bills to pay, it takes everything in us just to keep the wolves at bay. I don't know whats going on, I'm feeling so week when I need to be strong. I know I'm not to blame, I'm just three weeks away from being tossed out in the rain. I don't ask for a hand out, while some fat bastard profits from the bailout, but it ain't you and me. And as we seek to place the blame, to thoses higher up it's just a game. They'll keep us fighting right or wrong, to take the focus off what's really going on. We were all doing pretty good, until recent events made it understood we'd be, Standing in the unemployment line, just spend that check and everything will be just fine. We can't let em win. And as we give until it hurts, the further back we all revert. The ones on top get all the cash, the rest of us can all just stuff it up our ass.

Too Many People
Lyrics only›
There's too many people, scrimping and saving and going nowhere, The future looks bleaker, everyday. There's too many people, living on credit Not a penny to spare, coz there ain't no other way, They live day to day. There's too many people, slipping through the cracks because nobody cares, Why should we help if they can't pay. There's too many people, hoarding and judging And causing despair, demanding we do what they say, I think I'll choose my own way. It would be nice to see, a world full of love and no poverty, You tell me that there's just no way, still it would be nice to say. There's too many people, enjoying life like it was meant to be, Helping each other along the way. There's too many people, realizing all at once, That greed's not the way, sounds like a sound philosophy, at least it does to me. There's too many people, too many people... There's too many people, too many people...

Freedom
Lyrics only›
You tell me I have my freedom, but I don't understand why If I really have freedom, why is it I can't get high? While looking over our shoulders, they do things we shouldn't do. Give us that old double standard, "do as I say, not as I do". I'd like to know, who made up the rules? Can someone tell me, do they really think we're fools? Sell weapons to other Countries, call it free trade if you will. Those who see it another way, call it your license to kill. And we have men in the Whitehouse, who seem to glorify war. Now we don't have communism to fight they point the guns at our door They'll break it down in a minute take your home and property And they'll call it a war on drugs but it's a war against you and me Wake up people can't you see what's going on How many rights do we loose before we tell them that they're wrong Well you can stay if you want to follow hypocrisy in vain As for me I have no hope for change Amsterdam looks better each day They don't preach morals or values that has to come from within What people need is the right to choose even if in your mind they sin What we need to teach is responsibility Once we learn that the rest comes easy You tell me I have my freedom, but I don't understand why If I really have freedom, why is it I can't get high? why is it I can't get high?... why is it I can't get high?

Human Race
Lyrics only›
You read it in the papers, you see it on T.V. All those loathsome rapers, of equality, Well you can keep on talking now... 'till you're blue in the face. But the way you're going bout things, Ain't good for the human race. The policies they've handed down, Don't speak for majority. The fact that we're allowing this, Really makes no sence to me. Coz the policies ain't working... No Infact they're quite a disgrace. And the way they're going bout things, Ain't good for the human race. Yea... Yea... Yea... You need to have a mini cam, To prove anything you say. They say that they believe in God, But I don't think he wants it that way And if God's really coming, He'll put you right in your place. The way you're going bout things, Ain't good for the human race. the way you're going bout things, just ain't no good for the human race.

Who Am I Anyway
Lyrics only›
Hey hey hey hey hey hey, who am I anyway? hey hey hey hey hey hey, who am I anyway? Well excuse me, if I don't seem concerned, by what you think of me. But the truth is I don't really care, coz I'm more than shallow eyes can see And forgive me I don't wear designer clothes or live up on a hill. and you won't find me buying stocks and bonds and I probably never will. But that's OK... who am I anyway? Hey hey hey hey hey hey who am I anyway? hey hey hey hey hey hey who am I anyway? Well... forgive me if I took your place in line but I was unaware That your time is more valuable than mine well I don't think that's fair. And I wonder did you buy your attitude or were you just born with it Well forgive me if I sound a little rude sure sounds like bullshit to me. But that's OK... who am I anyway? Hey hey hey hey hey hey who am I anyway? hey hey hey hey hey hey who am I anyway?

I’m The One Who’s Crying Now
Lyrics only›
We were together, so long ago, and every day my love for you grew, How much you'll never know. But something went wrong somewhere along the line. You said that you no longer cared you didn't want to be mine. But I can't blame you. I'd be a fool if I tried. I was the one who ran around And you're the one who cried. But, now things are different. So much has changed. Coz I'm the one who's crying now and calling your name. She's got you now, ain't nothing I can do, to make you want to come back Even though I love you. You're in her arms and that's where you're gonna stay. And me I'll be crying just like I did the day you went away. But I can't blame you. I'd be a fool if I tried. I was the one who ran around And you're the one who cried. But, now things are different, so much has changed. Coz I'm the one who's crying now and calling your name. Yea... I'm the one who's crying now and calling your name.

4 2 0 — “you’re still on my mind”
Lyrics only›
10 years have gone, and three thousand miles, are all we have between us. I don't understand, I'll bet it's been years, since I've thought about you. And I have someone who understands me and treats me real good, Always builds me up and I know, he never would be unkind, But you're still on my mind, you're still on my mind. I wonder sometimes, do you think of me, does my memory ever haunt you. But don't get me wrong, coz you're on my mind, it doesn't mean that I want you. Coz I have someone who understands me and treats me real good, Always builds me up and I know he never would be unkind, But you're still on my mind, you're still on my mind.
